Sun Valley Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit, Getting There & Where to Stay

JustSkiing TeamMarch 12, 20268 min read

Sun Valley invented the chairlift in 1936 and has been synonymous with sophisticated mountain luxury ever since. Bald Mountain ("Baldy") rises 3,400 vertical feet and offers consistently some of the best grooming in North America.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Powder Season (January – February)

~220 inches of annual snowfall — lower than Utah or Montana but cold temperatures preserve quality exceptionally well. Sun Valley's groomers are legendary. When storms arrive, Baldy's bowls and tree runs deliver excellent powder.

Holiday Crowds

Sun Valley draws affluent clientele, and Christmas-to-New-Year's is the busiest and most expensive period. Target early January or early February for the best value.

Spring Skiing (March – April)

Long sunny days and excellent corn snow on Baldy's open faces. Lower ticket prices and warm après-ski in Ketchum.

Getting There: Nearest Airports

  • Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) — ~15 minutes in Hailey, Idaho. Seasonal nonstop from Denver, LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Salt Lake City. Most convenient by far.
  • Boise Airport (BOI) — ~2.5 hours via US-20 and SR-75. Larger hub with more carriers and lower fares. Scenic drive that can be affected by winter weather.

Car Rental vs. Shuttle/Transit

Sun Valley operates an extensive free bus system connecting Sun Valley Village, Ketchum, and both Baldy and Dollar Mountain base areas. A car is not necessary for a focused ski trip. Sun Valley Express runs scheduled Boise-to-Sun-Valley shuttles ($60-90/person).

Where to Stay

Sun Valley Village

The resort's historic heart built in the 1930s. Sun Valley Lodge is a luxury property with hot springs pool, skating rink, and excellent dining. Ski-in/ski-out access to Dollar Mountain with bus service to Baldy.

  • Pros: Historically unique experience, resort amenities
  • Cons: High peak-season rates

Ketchum

Excellent restaurant scene, galleries, boutiques, and après-ski bars. Free bus to both Baldy base areas. 20-40% lower rates than Sun Valley Village.

  • Pros: Best dining and nightlife, free bus access, lower prices
  • Cons: Not ski-in/ski-out

Hailey

10 miles south of Ketchum with the most budget-friendly options. 15-20 minutes from Baldy.

  • Pros: Lowest prices in the Wood River Valley
  • Cons: Requires a car or public transit; further from the action
