Jackson Hole Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit, Getting There & Where to Stay

JustSkiing TeamMarch 12, 20268 min read

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is widely regarded as one of the greatest ski destinations in the world. Over 4,000 feet of continuous vertical, notoriously steep terrain, and 400+ inches of annual snowfall make it a bucket-list destination for experienced skiers.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Powder Season (December – February)

January is historically the snowiest month. Fresh storms on Rendezvous Mountain and Après Vous are transformative. The famous inbound extreme terrain — Corbett's Couloir, the Alta Chutes — skis best with significant snowpack, typically by mid-January.

Sweet Spot

Early to mid-January — after New Year's rush, before Presidents' Week — offers the best combination of snow, manageable crowds, and slightly lower prices.

Spring Skiing (March)

Long days, warmer temps, fully open mountain. Annual spring festivals add to the atmosphere. Ticket prices decrease in late March.

Getting There: Nearest Airports

  • Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) — ~20 minutes from Teton Village. Inside Grand Teton National Park. Nonstop flights from Denver, Dallas, Chicago, LA, NYC, Atlanta. Fares can be higher but convenience is unmatched.
  • Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA) — ~1.5 hours. Limited service but sometimes lower fares.
  • Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) — ~4.5 hours. Alternative when JAC fares are high.

Car Rental vs. Shuttle/Transit

START Bus runs free shuttle between Jackson town and Teton Village throughout ski season. If flying into JAC and staying in Teton Village, a shuttle is perfectly adequate. A car is useful for exploring Grand Teton National Park and other activities. AWD/4WD recommended for Wyoming winter driving.

Where to Stay

Teton Village (Ski-In/Ski-Out)

Four Seasons, Hotel Terra, Teton Mountain Lodge, and The Cloudveil. Steps from the Aerial Tram with walkable village dining and après-ski. Rates $400-1,500+/night peak season.

  • Pros: Steps from the tram, world-class amenities, walkable village
  • Cons: Very high peak-season rates

Jackson Town

12 miles from Teton Village with vibrant Western downtown, Town Square, and dozens of restaurants. Free START Bus shuttle to the resort. Wide lodging range from budget to luxury (Amangani, Snake River Lodge).

  • Pros: Dining variety, nightlife, Western character, lower prices than Teton Village
  • Cons: 12-mile shuttle ride to the mountain
