Furano Ski Resort sits in the heart of Hokkaido, offering outstanding dry powder, far fewer crowds than Niseko, and an authentically Japanese mountain town experience. Known for excellent grooming and consistently cold temperatures that preserve snow quality, Furano is a favorite of in-the-know powder chasers.
Best Time to Visit
Peak Season (January – February)
Central Hokkaido's location produces exceptionally cold, dry snow. Furano's inland position means temperatures regularly drop below -15°C, keeping powder light for days after a storm. February tends to be the snowiest month.
Spring Skiing (March)
Conditions remain excellent into March. Furano's Kitanomine Zone and Premium Zone hold snow well. Fewer visitors and lower prices make March an excellent value.
Getting There: Nearest Airports
- Asahikawa Airport (AKJ) — ~1 hour by car or bus. Small domestic airport with flights from Tokyo (Haneda). The closest and most convenient option.
- New Chitose Airport (CTS), Sapporo — ~2.5 hours by car. Major international hub. Lavender Bus and other operators run seasonal direct buses to Furano.
Car Rental vs. Transit
Furano town is compact and the ski resort runs a shuttle bus. However, a rental car opens up day trips to Kamui Ski Links, Asahidake (Hokkaido's highest peak with backcountry touring), and other nearby areas. Hokkaido rental cars come with studded winter tires. JR train service connects Furano to Asahikawa and Sapporo for non-drivers.
