Coronet Peak & The Remarkables Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit, Getting There & Where to Stay

Queenstown, New Zealand is the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere, and its two ski areas — Coronet Peak and The Remarkables — offer accessible alpine skiing with stunning lakeside scenery. The season runs from June to October, with both resorts operated by NZSki and accessible on one lift pass.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Season (July – August)

July and August deliver the most reliable snow and coldest temperatures. New Zealand school holidays in July bring the biggest crowds. Coronet Peak offers night skiing on Fridays and Saturdays — a unique Southern Hemisphere experience.

September

Spring skiing with longer days and excellent conditions. Lower crowds and prices. The Remarkables' shadow basins hold snow well into October in good years.

Getting There: Nearest Airports

  • Queenstown Airport (ZQN) — ~25 minutes to Coronet Peak, ~40 minutes to The Remarkables. Domestic flights from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch. Some direct flights from Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast).

Car Rental vs. Transit

NZSki operates shuttle buses from Queenstown to both ski areas. A rental car provides more flexibility and is useful for exploring the broader region (Wanaka, Treble Cone, Cardrona are within 1.5 hours). Chains are required above the snow line — available for rent with your car or at the resort base.

Where to Stay

Queenstown Central

A vibrant lakeside town with an outstanding restaurant and bar scene. No shortage of accommodation from backpacker hostels to luxury hotels (Eichardt's Private Hotel, Sofitel). Central to both ski areas.

  • Pros: Best dining, nightlife, and activities; central to both resorts; wide price range
  • Cons: 25-40 minute drive to ski areas; no ski-in/ski-out

Arrowtown

A charming historic gold-mining village 20 minutes from Queenstown. Closer to Coronet Peak than Queenstown itself.

  • Pros: Charming village character, excellent restaurants, slightly closer to Coronet Peak
  • Cons: Quieter; further from The Remarkables; limited accommodation
