Breckenridge Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit, Getting There & Where to Stay

Breckenridge is one of Colorado's most popular ski resorts. With five peaks, a charming historic Main Street, and easy access from Denver, "Breck" offers something for every skier.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Powder Season (January – February)

January and February deliver the best snow. Cold temperatures lock in dry powder. Midweek skiing in these months offers excellent snow with manageable crowds.

Spring Skiing (March – May)

March is one of Breck's best-kept secrets — deepest snowpack, longer days, spring sunshine. Breck's high elevation (9,600 ft base) helps it hold snow longer than most Colorado resorts, often skiing into May.

Holidays to Avoid

Christmas/New Year's week and Presidents' Day weekend bring the largest crowds. MLK Weekend is also very busy.

Getting There: Nearest Airports

  • Denver International Airport (DEN) — ~1 hour 45 minutes via I-70 west to Highway 9 south through Frisco. Friday and Sunday afternoon traffic is notoriously heavy — budget an extra hour during peak periods.

Car Rental vs. Shuttle/Transit

Shuttle Services

Colorado Mountain Express and Epic Mountain Express run shared transfers from DEN. The free Summit Stage bus system connects Breckenridge to Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, Keystone, and Copper Mountain — you can get around the entire region without a car.

Do You Need a Car?

If staying on Main Street or slopeside, you can easily get by without one. The free town shuttle connects the ski area to Main Street regularly.

Where to Stay

Ski-In/Ski-Out Properties

Grand Hyatt Breckenridge, One Ski Hill Place, and various slopeside condos sit at the base.

  • Pros: Walk to lifts, no transportation hassle
  • Cons: Premium pricing, especially during holidays

Main Street & In-Town

Breckenridge's historic Main Street is a walkable strip of restaurants, bars, and shops — a short free shuttle ride from the ski area.

  • Pros: Excellent dining and après-ski, lively atmosphere, wide price range
  • Cons: Short shuttle ride to the mountain

Frisco & Silverthorne

10-15 minutes from Breck with noticeably lower lodging prices. Free Summit Stage bus connects to Breck.

  • Pros: Lower prices, central Summit County location, bus access to multiple resorts
  • Cons: Daily commute; parking at Breck can be limited on peak days
