Big White Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit, Getting There & Where to Stay

Big White Ski Resort in the Okanagan Highlands of British Columbia is Canada's largest ski-in/ski-out resort village and one of the most family-friendly ski destinations in the country. Known for its renowned "champagne powder" snow and frequent snowfall — the resort averages over 750 cm (roughly 295 inches) per season — Big White offers a relaxed, car-free village experience combined with excellent intermediate and advanced terrain. Its proximity to Kelowna Airport makes it one of the most accessible ski destinations in western Canada.

Best Time to Visit

January – February: Prime Powder Season

January and February deliver Big White's deepest snowpack and most frequent snowfall. The Okanagan Highlands sit in a position that captures interior BC storm systems efficiently, meaning snowfall during these months can be very consistent. The resort's high elevation (summit at 7,606 feet) and cold temperatures preserve dry, light snow — a characteristic Big White is famous for. This is the busiest period, particularly with families taking advantage of school break windows, so book lodging early.

Christmas – New Year's

Big White is extremely popular with Australian and international visitors during the holiday season, a trend that has made the December holiday window one of the resort's busiest and most festive periods. If you are visiting over Christmas or New Year's, book your lodging and flights at least 4 to 6 months in advance. Conditions are typically excellent by late December.

March: Long Days, Good Snow

March at Big White offers a softer, more relaxed experience. The snowpack is at its deepest, spring sunshine begins to appear more frequently, and families have largely departed after school breaks end. For couples or intermediate skiers looking to rack up runs on wide, groomed cruisers, March is an excellent value window.

April: Spring Skiing

Big White stays open into late April and the spring skiing experience is unique — warm days, soft snow, and a laid-back village atmosphere. Terrain availability decreases as the season winds down, but the core runs and main village area remain open and enjoyable.

Getting There: Nearest Airports

  • Kelowna International Airport (YLW) — Approximately 1 hour from Big White. YLW is served by Air Canada, WestJet, and several U.S. carriers (including direct flights from Seattle and San Francisco on Alaska Airlines seasonally). This remarkably short connection from a proper commercial airport is one of Big White's key advantages over many BC interior ski destinations. The drive up Highway 33 to the resort is manageable, though the final section requires winter tires (mandatory in BC).

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is approximately 4.5 to 5 hours west — a long drive but viable for those who prefer flying into a major hub and combining the trip with time in Vancouver. Kamloops Airport (YKA) is about 2.5 hours away and has limited service.

Car Rental vs. Shuttle/Transit

Shuttle Services (Recommended)

Big White Ski Resort operates its own shuttle service connecting Kelowna Airport to the resort and return, with scheduled departures timed to match major flight arrivals and departures. This is one of the smoothest ski resort transfer experiences in Canada — you can go from gate to gondola with minimal hassle. For most visitors, particularly those staying in the village and not planning day trips to other areas, the resort shuttle is the best option.

Renting a Car

A car is useful if you plan to explore Kelowna (known for its wineries and lake activities) or make day trips to other ski areas like Silver Star Mountain Resort (about 1.5 hours north near Vernon). For a trip focused entirely on Big White, a car adds parking costs and driving stress without much benefit, since the village is ski-in/ski-out and essentially car-free. If you rent, AWD or 4WD with winter tires is mandatory for the resort access road.

Where to Stay

In the Village: Ski-In/Ski-Out (Highly Recommended)

Big White's signature feature is its pedestrian ski village — one of the largest in Canada — where virtually all lodging, dining, and retail is accessible on skis or a short walk from the lifts. Properties in the village range from the full-service Inn at Big White and Chateau Big White to dozens of condominium complexes available through the resort's rental program or platforms like Vacasa. The Village Centre Mall is the heart of the resort, surrounded by ski-in/ski-out condos and chalets.

  • Pros: True ski-in/ski-out access, no car needed once at the resort, excellent family-friendly amenities (skating, tubing, snowmobile rentals all in the village), vibrant après-ski
  • Cons: Premium pricing for peak periods; the village is isolated from Kelowna, so you are committed to resort dining and activities unless you have a car

Happy Valley: The Base Alternative

The Happy Valley area at the lower portion of the resort is slightly removed from the main Village Centre and tends to offer more budget-friendly condo options. It is still ski-in/ski-out to the Happy Valley lift and a short walk or ski to the main village facilities. Families who want more space and kitchen facilities at a lower nightly rate often find good value here.
