Aspen Snowmass Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit, Getting There & Where to Stay

JustSkiing TeamMarch 12, 20268 min read

Aspen Snowmass is four distinct ski mountains — Aspen Mountain (Ajax), Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass — all on one lift ticket. Together they offer over 5,500 acres set against one of Colorado's most storied mountain towns.

Best Time to Visit

Peak Season (January – February)

Snowfall is consistent, all four mountains are fully open, and conditions are prime. Also the most expensive months. Midweek January is the sweet spot for great conditions with manageable lift lines.

Holiday Periods

Christmas/New Year's week brings massive crowds and the highest rates in North American skiing. Book 6+ months ahead. Presidents' Day and Thanksgiving are also extremely busy.

Spring Skiing (March – April)

March is arguably the best month for most skiers. Deepest snowpack, warmer weather, and festive spring après-ski at Ajax Tavern.

Getting There: Nearest Airports

  • Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) — ~15 minutes. Most convenient but flights are frequently cancelled due to weather and challenging approach. Direct service from Denver, LA, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, and NYC. Always have a backup plan.
  • Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) — ~70 minutes via I-70 and Glenwood Canyon. More reliable than ASE with lower fares.
  • Denver International Airport (DEN) — ~4 hours via I-70 through Glenwood Canyon. Best prices and flight selection. Note: Independence Pass is closed in winter.

Car Rental vs. Shuttle/Transit

The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) runs frequent free buses between Aspen, Snowmass Village, Basalt, and Glenwood Springs. If staying in Aspen or Snowmass Village, you likely don't need a car. A car is useful if staying in the Roaring Fork Valley communities.

Where to Stay

Aspen Town

One of the most vibrant mountain towns in the world. The Little Nell (ski-in/ski-out at Ajax base), Hotel Jerome, and St. Regis are premier properties.

  • Pros: World-class dining, nightlife, culture; direct Aspen Mountain access; free shuttle to other mountains
  • Cons: Some of the highest hotel rates in North American skiing

Snowmass Base Village

Ski-in/ski-out at the largest of the four mountains. Westin Snowmass and growing collection of restaurants and shops.

  • Pros: Ski-in/ski-out, somewhat lower prices than Aspen, family-friendly
  • Cons: Less vibrant nightlife; shuttle needed for other mountains

Basalt & Carbondale

18-30 miles from Aspen with significantly lower prices. RFTA buses connect to Aspen and Snowmass.

  • Pros: Much lower lodging costs, local feel, bus access
  • Cons: Longer commute; bus schedules require planning
