Choose the Snowmass uphill route from the trailhead you can legally use, the objective you can complete, and the descent you have verified. Two Creeks, Elk Camp, High Alpine, Sam's Knob, and Campground are distinct route decisions.

Start with the official policy
Read Snowmass's current uphill policy and map before leaving. Uphill access can close independently of lift operations and may use different hours, direction, and equipment rules.

Route-choice questions
- Which official trailhead and parking rule apply?
- What are the permitted hours and direction?
- Which pass, armband, or acknowledgment is required?
- Is the intended descent open and appropriate?
- Does the plan depend on a lift, and is there a non-lift fallback?
- Are dog rules or other restrictions route-specific?
Do not turn a route into an availability statistic
The Snowmass dashboard records change-based observations. It does not provide the denominator needed for a historical availability percentage, and an offseason CLOSED state does not forecast winter access.
Conservative fallback
If the current policy, trailhead, descent, or return is unclear, do not improvise another resort route. Choose a separately authorized outing or wait for official confirmation.
Trailhead logistics decide the practical route
A route that looks ideal on the map may be wrong for the available parking, bus, pass pickup, or planned finish. Confirm where the activity legally begins and how the group returns to that point after the descent.
Lift-dependent and self-contained plans
Some objectives may assume a lift or gondola for part of the return. Treat that operation as a hard dependency and retain a policy-compliant alternative. Never descend a closed or unsuitable route simply because the uphill segment was permitted.
Uphill etiquette
Stay on the designated side and route, travel single file where required, use lights or reflective equipment when policy calls for them, and yield to grooming and resort operations. Dogs, headphones, and group size may have route-specific rules.
Conditions are not authorization
Good snow, visible skin tracks, or other users on the route do not establish permission. The current official uphill status, signs, closures, and staff direction control access every time.
The policy is part of the route
A named uphill trail is only usable when the official time, access, descent, and day-of conditions all align.
