Ski Wax Brushes Explained: Steel, Bronze, Horsehair, or Nylon—and in What Order?

JustSkiing TeamJuly 14, 20262 min read

Wax brushes clean and finish the base structure after the appropriate scraping step. Steel, bronze, horsehair and nylon are tool categories; the correct sequence depends on the wax, brush and manufacturer’s method.

Do not turn a tool list into one universal order

BrushWhat to confirm
Steel or bronzeWhether it is specified for cleaning or post-scrape work, and how aggressive the particular brush is.
HorsehairIts role in the chosen finishing sequence; hand and rotary methods need not be identical.
NylonWhether the maker specifies it as the final polish for that wax and method.

A documented Swix order

For Swix’s hand-brush workflow, use a dedicated fine steel brush for pre-wax cleaning. After waxing and scraping, use a medium-coarse steel or bronze brush, then nylon for the final polish. Its rotary glide-wax workflow uses steel then horsehair, with nylon as an optional final polish. Swix also describes a horsehair pass before steel for soft warm-weather wax to reduce clogging. Apply those examples only with the corresponding wax and tools; they are not one universal sequence.

Follow one documented workflow

Swix’s brush guidance distinguishes hand-brush sequences from rotary sequences. Its rotary instructions also treat soft warm-weather wax differently to avoid clogging. Those distinctions matter more than buying every material and brushing in a memorized order.

  • Select the instructions for the wax and tools you actually own.
  • Let the wax cool and scrape as directed before the relevant finishing steps.
  • Keep brushes clean and dedicated as the instructions require, especially where contamination matters.
  • For rotary equipment, follow the manufacturer’s direction, speed and protection requirements; do not transfer a hand-brush routine blindly.

A practical first kit

Ask a shop which limited brush set covers your chosen wax routine and have them demonstrate when the base is finished. More passes and more aggressive tools are not automatically better. If old wax, dirt or damage needs treatment, deal with that before expecting polishing to solve it.
