Ski Helmet Labels Explained: ASTM F2040, EN 1077, and Mips

A helmet standard and a branded impact-management feature describe different things. Read the actual model’s certification label first; a technology logo alone does not establish certification or guarantee protection from injury.

Separate the labels

LabelHow to use it
ASTM F2040A recreational snow-sports helmet specification; check the helmet’s declared compliance.
EN 1077A ski/snowboard helmet standard. Check the actual label and manufacturer documentation, including any class designation.
Mips or another technology nameA feature of particular helmet models, separate from the standards label. Do not use it as a replacement for certification.

Fit remains a separate check

  • Try the actual helmet size and adjustment system. It should stay in position without relying on painful pressure.
  • Wear your goggles when testing; confirm that the combination does not push the helmet out of place.
  • Follow the maker’s strap, care and replacement instructions. Do not assume an impact-damaged helmet remains serviceable because it looks intact.
  • For a used helmet with an unknown impact history, resolve that uncertainty before relying on it.

Ask a specific buying question

“Which standard does this exact model comply with, and where is that marked?” is more useful than “Is it the safest?” Compare fit, documented certification and intended use. Neither a certification nor a technology claim guarantees avoidance of concussion or other injury, and a helmet does not make terrain above your ability appropriate.
